Hakone Town, Kanagawa Prefecture. The closest mountain resort to the Tokyo area, gathering Lake Ashi and Owakudani, both shaped by volcanoes, and numerous hot springs. Part of Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park.

The Story of
Hakone

About two hours by train from central Tokyo. As the mountain railway climbs, switching back again and again, the scenery gradually turns a deeper green.

Lake Ashi formed in the caldera of the Hakone volcano. In the morning, mist creeps along the mountainsides, and sightseeing boats leave slow wakes across the water. On clear days, Mount Fuji appears beyond the lake.

Hakone is also a hot spring town of long standing. Gaze at the lake, walk the mountains, soak in the waters at night. Right beside the city, such a day awaits.
